The full E-Class Cabriolet range arrives in the UK with a choice of three diesel and four petrol engines, with prices ranging from £34,670 to £56,195.
Mercedes-Benz has created two UK-specific Cabriolet models – the sumptuous SE and the dynamic Sport. Specification is exceptionally generous, with automatic dual-zone climate control, leather interior, Heated Front Seats and the unique AIRCAP® system, among other features, as standard.
The new Cabriolet is underpinned by a chassis that’s a full 30 per cent stiffer than its predecessor for exceptional dynamism and safety levels, and its fully-automatic folding roof features an innovative three-layer construction for class-leading refinement.
At the push of a button, the Cabriolet’s AIRCAP® system significantly reduces on-the-go turbulence by deploying a lightweight motorised airfoil from the top of the windscreen frame that redirects air over the driver and passengers’ heads.
AIRCAP® is complemented by the optional AIRSCARF® system that delivers a regulated and adjustable flow of warm air around the driver and front passengers’ neck and shoulders, for exceptional all-weather versatility.
The new Cabriolet will, for the first time in the UK, feature diesel power with four and six-cylinder common rail turbo diesel engines delivering up to 53.3 mpg combined economy and a low 143 g/km CO2 emissions rating.
Four petrol powerplants round up the range, feature a 12 per cent average improvement in fuel efficiency and a substantial 39 g/km drop in CO2. All four and six-cylinder engines feature economy-enhancing BlueEFFICIENCY technology.
Mercedes-Benz has featured a coveted fabric-roofed convertible in its line-up for decades, and the new E-Class Cabriolet bears all the hallmarks of these hugely desirable and emotional vehicles. The new model’s peerless combination of unruffled grace, head-turning style, sumptuous accommodation and exceptional safety make it the perfect four-seater for tackling all four of the UK’s unpredictable seasons.
Lower, wider and longer than its predecessor, the new Cabriolet features the now familiar quad-lamp visage of the latest E-Class to create a strong and distinctive family link with other Saloon, Estate and Coupé members of the E-Class family. Its fully automatic roof has been acoustically optimised for class-leading refinement and insulation, and it takes just 20 seconds to transform the Mercedes-Benz from snug coupé to alfresco convertible at speeds of up to 25 mph.
In conjunction with an integrated draught stop between the rear seats, the unique standard-fit AIRCAP® feature employs a 211-part motorised wind deflector incorporated into the top of the windscreen frame. When raised, this lightweight but robust airfoil redirects the slipstream over the top of the occupants’ heads to leave the cabin warm, calm, quiet and free of buffeting. The acclaimed neck-warming AIRSCARF® system is now direction-adjustable and is available as on option for even further comfort when open-air motoring.
For the first time in the UK, the new Cabriolet will feature diesel power. The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY common rail units deliver exceptional refinement, up to 53.3 mpg combined economy and a low CO2 rating from 143 g/km. These are joined by four petrol engines – the E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 500 which all feature an average 12 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and up to 39 g/km reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the previous model. All four- and six-cylinder units benefit from BlueEFFICIENCY economy-enhancing measures.
The new Cabriolet features an incredibly stiff chassis – a full 30 per cent stiffer than its predecessor – as an ideal starting point for exceptional impact protection. The robust A-pillars, fully integrated B-pillars and reinforced side sills, are complemented by Mercedes-Benz’ advanced electronic features including PRE-SAFE® the award-winning anticipatory safety suite, ATTENTION ASSIST, ADAPTIVE HIGHBEAM ASSIST , BLIND SPOT ASSIST (from June 2010) among others.
In 1956, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the stunning 220S Cabriolet, the four-seat convertible that created a template for sleek, stylish and engaging open-topped driving. This was followed by the W111 Fintail convertible but it would be another two decades before the next fabric-roofed cabriolet version of the E-Class arrived – the W124 model in 1991. The new 2010 model draws from this rich design and engineering heritage to create the perfect cabriolet for the 21st Century.
