At a glance
The smallest member of our SUV range, alongside the M-Class, G-Class and GL-Class, the GLA-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz to enter the fast-growing compact SUV segment. Sharing much of its architecture with the award-wining A-Class, the GLA-Class marries an urban-friendly footprint, a spacious and intelligently configured cabin layout with chunky go-anywhere versatility. The extensive model range is available with the choice of front-wheel drive or advanced 4MATIC all-wheel drive, sophisticated direct injection petrol or diesel engines, and Sport or dynamic AMG Line trim lines.
The Sport model line
SE models are generously equipped with the following standard equipment: 18-inch alloy wheels; off-road Comfort suspension; Easy-Pack powered tailgate; chromed front apron and twin-pipe exhaust system; aluminium roof rails; reversing camera; illuminated door sill panels; nappa leather-trimmed multi‑function 12-button steering wheel; Artico leather upholstery; an integrated 5.8-inch tablet-style colour display with an Audio 20 single CD/radio with Media Interface for external devices, and air conditioning.
The AMG Line
Dynamic AMG Line models are further distinguished by the following standard features: 18-inch AMG alloy wheels; AMG bodystyling; Dynamic Handling Package; 15 mm lowered Sports suspension; perforated front brake discs with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering on the calipers; Artico leather and Dinamica microfibre upholstery with red contrast stitching; Sports seats with integrated headrests and ambient lighting, and a 12-button flat-bottomed sports multi-function steering wheel in nappa leather.
Efficient front wheel drive or 4MATIC all-paw grip
The GLA-Class is available with the choice of traditional front wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive. In models with the 4MATIC system, the rear axle carrier is isolated with rubber bushings for the benefit of ride comfort. This drivetrain features a multi-disc clutch integrated into the rear axle differential with electrohydraulic control, enabling fully variable torque distribution, from full front-wheel drive to 50:50 split between front and rear axles. 4MATIC also includes a special off-road driving mode that enhances traction on loose and slippery surfaces, complete with DSR Downhill Speed Regulation for safe and speed-controlled descents.
The petrol-powered GLA 250 is powered by a new lightweight all-alloy turbo-charged 1,991 cc engine, which is fitted with ECO start/stop functionality as standard. Technical highlights include twin chain-driven overhead camshafts, third-generation direct petrol injection and spray-guided combustion based on that in the Mercedes-Benz BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engines. It drives all four wheels through a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and a seven-speed 7G DCT automatic transmission.
Both GLA 200 d and GLA 220 d are powered by Mercedes-Benz’ acclaimed 2,143 cc turbo diesel powerplant, which features third-generation common-rail technology, with the rail pressure increased to 1,800 bar, and ECO start/stop functionality. Refinement-enhancing features include two Lanchester balancer shafts, markedly longer connecting rods both help reduce friction and a dual-mass flywheel. Drivers have a choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed 7G DCT automatic transmissions, and front wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The GLA-Class also introduces safety features previously unattainable in the compact SUV sector to the market. Attention Assist, Active Bonnet and the unique Collision Prevention Assist are just three of the advanced safety features fitted as standard to every model. Other standard features include; seven airbags, Adaptive Brake Assist with hold function and Hill Start Assist; Acceleration Skid Control (ASR), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP®), Brake Assist and latest generation ABS anti-lock braking system, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Engineered for dynamism and agility
In keeping with its visual athleticism, the GLA-Class features a low centre of gravity, MacPherson strut front and an independent multilink rear suspension. Three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel manage the incoming forces meaning that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are independent of one another. The wheel carriers and spring control arms are aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. With a length x width x height of 4,417 x 2,022 x 1,494 mm, 481 litres of cargo space and a wheelbase of 2,699 mm, the GLA-Class offers generous accommodation for five and their luggage. Kerb weights range from 1,505-1,535 kg, while braked and unbraked towing capacity range from 750-1800 kg.
