Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet is the performance flagship of the luxurious S-Class Cabriolet range, combining the sumptuous sophistication of an immensely powerful and elegant four-seater convertible with advanced safety and driver assistance systems. Key figures
The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet is powered by a hand-assembled 5,461 cc biturbo direct-injection V8 engine, which generates 585 hp at 5,500 rpm and 900 Nm of torque, which remains constant from 2,250 – 3,750 rpm. Driving through a dynamic seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic sports transmission with four driving modes and ECO start/stop as standard, the four-seater convertible will sprint to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds, and onto a 155 mph electronically limited top speed. Combined economy and CO2 emission figures are 27.2 mpg and 244 g/km.
The V8’s exhaust system has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission is in Controlled Efficiency mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations for a smooth and understated engine note. In Sport and Manual modes, the exhaust flaps are more responsive and open earlier particularly during engaging enthusiastic driving to deliver AMG’s emotive signature soundtrack.
Advanced roof technology
The Cabriolet’s fully automatic roof features a triple-layer tensioning-arm layout. The outer fabric cover incorporates a waterproof internal butyl layer, which, along with the insulatory roof lining and double-glazed windows, significantly lowers in-cabin noise levels. The insulating layer also ensures that visible ribbing does not spoil the roof’s external silhouette. The roof can be operated at speeds of up to 37 mph and opening or closing takes around 20 seconds. When stowed, the soft top is deposited above the automatically extending luggage compartment partition. It is available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red.
Lightweight chassis with air suspension
The Cabriolet adopts around 60 percent of its bodyshell components from the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupé, but benefits from a raft of lightweight chassis enhancements to both lower weight and boost chassis integrity. The all-new the rear floor is manufactured from aluminium, as are the longitudinal members, which share their technology from the current SL roadster, and the rear bulkhead, which also supports the pyrotechnically extending roll bars. The Cabriolet is fitted as standard with the full-support AIRMATIC semi-active air suspension. This features ADS PLUS adaptive damping system Sport and Comfort modes.
Four season comfort
The AIRCAP automatic wind protection system is optionally available. This consists of two components: a wind deflector with a net, set into the roof frame, that can be extended by seven centimetres, plus a similarly extendable draught-stop behind the rear seats, with a convex contour and stainless steel trim. At the touch of a button, AIRCAP significantly reduces in-cabin turbulence and noise. AIRCAP seamlessly combines with the optional AIRSCARF neck-level heating that circulates warmed air around the head and neck areas of occupants from the head restraints. Opting for the Warmth Comfort package heats the armrests on the centre console and the doors as well as the multifunction steering wheel for even great cold-weather comfort.
Intelligent climate control
The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet benefits from the sophisticated climate control concept for the S-Class saloon, but further enhanced with an innovative ‘set and forget’ climate control system that automatically and intelligently takes into account whether the car’s roof is open or closed. Featuring a bespoke new software architecture developed specifically for this application, the system transitions unobtrusively between roof-up or roof-down mode without any driver intervention for the last word in climate comfort.
First class safety
The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet sets new active and passive safety standards, with the following features available: Driving Assistance Package, which includes Distronic Plus with Steer Assist and Stop & Go Pilot, Pre-Safe® Brake and Pre-Safe® Plus, BAS Plus with Cross Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane-Keeping Assist; Parktronic with Active Park Assist and 360 degree camera; Adaptive Brake; seven airbags; Anti-lock braking system with Brake Assist; Crosswind Assist; Electronic Stability Programme with Acceleration Skid Control; Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus; and Pre-Safe Plus® anticipatory safety system, which can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency.
Pyrotechnic roll over protection system
The rear anti-roll bars are extended not by spring force but by pyrotechnical means, using a gas generator – a Mercedes-Benz first. On detecting an impending danger of the vehicle rolling over, the airbag control unit sends a corresponding signal to the roll-over protection system. This is Pyrotechnically extended behind the rear head restraints, helping to maintain a safe passenger compartment.
The Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet has a length x width x height of 5,027 x 1,899 x 1,417 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,945 mm.
