The Mercedes-Benz S-Class
- Better ride and handling
- Larger, more comfortable cabin
- Enhanced safety features
- Ground-breaking innovations
For more than 50 years, the S-Class has stood alone, the flagship saloon for Mercedes-Benz and the luxury car by which all others were judged. And the new S-Class, with its technical innovation, pioneering safety features and exemplary comfort, perfectly continues this proud tradition.
No less than a dozen technical innovations appear for the first time on this car, and it continues to raise the standards by which luxury saloons are judged. Not only does it set new standards for its agile handling, and provide an outstanding drive courtesy of its new, more powerful engines, there is also more space and more comfort inside.
- Brake Assist PLUS
- Night View Assist
- PRE-SAFE® occupant protection
- Enhanced multi-contour massaging seats
- DISTRONIC PLUS
- Park assist
- New COMAND system
The S-Class Saloon has always been at the cutting edge of new technology, and this latest model is no exception. Among the innovative highlights are Brake Assist PLUS, Night View Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS and PRE-SAFE®.
Brake Assist PLUS (optional equipment on UK models) is a further improvement of the Brake Assist system that has been standard in all Mercedes cars since 1997, and which recognises that, in an emergency, drivers often fail to brake hard enough. In the past, Brake Assist responded when it recognised a potential emergency, but the Brake Assist PLUS system anticipates such a situation, and helps to further reduce accidents.
With radar sensors, the new system measures the distance to the vehicle in front and, if the gap is too small, or the closing speed too high, a warning sounds. Then, if a collision is imminent, the system immediately calculates and makes available the optimum braking force - even if the driver fails to apply enough pressure to the pedal. On a dry road, at 62mph, this can reduce the car’s braking distance by as much as 45 per cent and, in driving simulator tests, it was found to reduce the accident rate by three-quarters.
The unique PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system (standard) takes this principle one step further, and improves on the system that first appeared in 2002 and which has been fitted in over 140,000 S-Class Saloons. At its heart is a unique combination of active and passive safety features. As with Brake Assist PLUS, PRE-SAFE® is able not only to react to potential problems but also, by assessing signals from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) sensors, it can anticipate an emergency.
As soon as it senses a potential accident - if braking reaches a critical level or a skid is imminent, for example - it automatically tensions the front seatbelts and inflates air cushions in the seats to protect the car’s occupants. Thanks to its NECK-PRO headrests, if a rear-end collision exceeds a certain level, the headrests are automatically moved 44 mm forward and 30 mm upwards to support the head and help to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries.
PRE-SAFE® will even close the side windows or sunroof, if they are open, and adjust the position of the electronically controlled rear seats. Together, this ensures that the occupants are in the position for the airbags to work most effectively.
In addition, the system takes into account both the severity of any accident and the size of the front-seat passenger. For example, if it senses a small passenger, only the first stage of the two-stage airbag will inflate. But, for a larger passenger both stages will inflate.
PRE-SAFE® continues to work even after the accident. In an accident above a certain severity, the fuel supply is automatically cut off and the hazard warning lights activated to warn following drivers of the danger. And, after an accident where the airbags have been deployed, the windows are automatically opened to ventilate the cabin, while the door locks are released to allow rescuers into the car more easily. The A- and C- pillars are even marked so as to show the emergency services where they can cut through them to reach passengers in the event of a serious accident.
Also using the radar sensors are DISTRONIC PLUS (optional), a further improvement of the DISTRONIC intelligent cruise control system, and Park Assist. Compared to the previous DISTRONIC, DISTRONIC PLUS now operates over a wider range of speeds and is even more convenient for a driver.
