Combining the most advanced safety, connectivity, luxury and technical sophistication, the new S-Class Saloon – available in either standard wheelbase or long wheelbase layout – once again sets the benchmark standards against which all others are judged. With its Intelligent Drive, Efficient Technology and Essence of Luxury, the S-Class Saloon is not just a technological spearhead for Mercedes-Benz, but also for the automotive development as a whole.

Class-leading efficiency in every output category

A range of revised petrol, diesel and hybrid variants mix performance with efficiency: S 350 d, S 300 h, S 400 Hybrid, S 500 e, S 500 and S 600. All models meet EU-6 emission requirements, boast class-leading efficiency and record up to 20 per cent lower fuel consumption than the outgoing model.

LED technology – the first ever car without a single light bulb

Around 100 years after the introduction of electric lighting in motor vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is now making a complete switch to LED technology – the S-Class Saloon is the first vehicle in the world that does not contain a single light bulb, outside or inside. The lighting’s multi-level functionality is another world first – out of consideration for any road users behind, the intensity of the brake lights is reduced at night or while waiting at traffic lights. Almost 500 LEDs illuminate the road, the vehicle, the interior and the boot. Depending on equipment, these include headlamps with each up to 56 LEDs, tail lights with each up to 35 LEDs plus four for the rear fog lamp, and interior including ambient lighting with up to 300 LEDs.

Sight, sound and touch

Two high-resolution TFT colour displays in 8:3 format with a screen diagonal of 30.7 cm (12.3 inches) form the information centre in the S-Class Saloon. The left-hand display performs the functions of the previous instrument cluster while the right-hand display allows the convenient control of infotainment and comfort functions. The control features include a touch-sensitive telephone keypad and an extended favourites function with twelve freely selectable memory places. Voice entry using Linguatronic via the Speech Dialog System allows full addresses to be spoken in one go and the telephone and audio systems can also be voice-controlled.

Seats at the centre of wellbeing

With numerous world firsts such as energising massage function based on the hot-stone principle and active seat ventilation with reversing fans that enable the surface temperature of a heated-up seat to be reduced much faster. The seat developers paid particular attention to the rear seats, with five different variants, including an Executive seat with a backrest angle adjustable by 43.5 degrees.

Creating a pleasant atmosphere

The Air-Balance Package comprises perfume atomisation, ionisation, and even more efficient filtration. The Thermotronic automatic climate control in the rear has two additional zones to prove thermal comfort. As another world first, the S-Class Saloon has an ‘active perfuming system’ as part of the Air-Balance Package, allowing the atomisation system to be switched on and off manually with adjustment of the intensity. It does not change the interior smell permanently, nor are the perfume molecules deposited on fabric surfaces or clothing.

Multimedia features include multi-users system

A multimedia generation system with intuitive operation celebrates its debut on S-Class Saloon. Innovations include the multi-user system, which allows independent access to the media sources of the entertainment system from any seat. A new feature of the navigation function is the interactive presentation of content, with new items including an animated compass, the ‘Driveshow’ for passenger information as in an aircraft, and the display of Google Maps on the head unit and in the rear.

Rigid hybrid bodyshell

With a torsional stiffness of 40.5 kN per degree, the S-Class Saloon sets a new record in its segment. A third-generation aluminium hybrid bodyshell has improved torsional stiffness by 50 per cent, with the entire outer skin now consisting of aluminium.

The world’s first suspension with ‘eyes’

The S-Class Saloon is the world’s first car to detect bumps on the road ahead. If Road Surface Scan detects unevenness via the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, Magic Body Control instantaneously sets up the suspension to deal with the situation. The 'eyes' are provided by the camera fitted behind the windscreen, which scans the road up to 15 metres ahead. The vehicle then adjusts the damping of each wheel to a tauter or softer setting in advance or the load in the wheel via an active hydraulic system. The suspension is adapted within fractions of a second and body movement reduced considerably. Road Surface Scan works if visibility is good, road structure is suitable and at speeds of up to 80 mph.

Extended PRE-SAFE® protection

The Pre-Safe® functions can help to prevent collisions with pedestrians and vehicles in front in city traffic, defuse dangerous situations caused by traffic behind, and enhance the protection offered by the seat belts. The Pre-Safe® Brake can also detect pedestrians and initiate autonomous braking to avoid a collision at speeds of up to 30 mph. Pre-Safe® Plus can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn the following traffic by activating the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. If the danger persists, the system can also firmly apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes and thus minimise the risk of whiplash injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by the impact. With Pre-Safe® Impulse, the driver and front passenger are pulled away from the direction of impact by their seat belts at an early phase of the crash before the resulting occupant deceleration sets in, alongside the beltbag and cushionbag.

The most advanced S-Class Saloon yet created

‘Intelligent Drive’, sees the use of the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, which is positioned behind the windscreen in the vicinity of the rear-view mirror, and features two ‘eyes’ to produce a 3D view of up to 50-metres in front. An additional factor is the networking of all senses, called ‘sensor fusion’. A summary of the assistance systems and those with notably enhanced functionality includes, Distronic Plus with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot to enable the car to automatically follow the vehicle in front in traffic jams; BAS Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist to detect cross traffic and pedestrians; Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus that allows main-beam to be on permanently; Night View Assist Plus, which is supplemented by a thermal imaging camera; and Attention Assist, which can warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness in an extended speed range.

SE and AMG model lines

The SE model line includes 18-inch alloy wheels, metallic paint, leather upholstery, reversing camera, COMAND Online, luxury climate control, Intelligent Light System, electrically adjustable heated front seats, DAB and Keyless start as standard. There is a nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel, Dark Brown Eucalyptus wood trim in high gloss and velour floor mats.

The AMG Line features the AMG Sports Package as standard, along with visible tailpipes, perforated brake discs and brake calipers with Mercedes-Benz lettering. On this inside the AMG Line features a wood and nappa leather-trimmed, two-spoke steering wheel, Black Poplar wood trim in high gloss, AMG brushed stainless steel sports pedals and AMG velour floor mats. All long wheelbase models also feature heated rear seats and ambient lighting as standard, over and above the short wheelbase specification.

Increase in size

The standard wheelbase S-Class Saloon has a wheelbase of 3,035 mm. With a length x width x height of 5,116 mm, 2,130 mm, and 1,496 mm it is 20 mm longer, 27 mm wider and 4 mm higher than its predecessor. Similarly, the long wheelbase model has a wheelbase of 3,165 mm and length x width x height wheelbase of 5,246 mm 2,130 mm, and 1,496 mm , again making it 20 mm longer, 27 mm wider and 4 mm higher than its predecessor.

For both models, this results in an additional 12 mm extra headroom for the driver, as well as 14 mm more shoulder room and 10 mm more elbow room in the front. There is a 14 mm increase in rear knee room and a 9 mm increase in rear shoulder room. Luggage capacity ranges from 460 litres to 530 litres, and kerb weights range from 1,995 kg to 2,185 kg depending on model and wheelbase length.

Intelligent efficiency at every turn

To minimise energy loss, the S 500 e's COMAND system looks at the route to predict where energy can be recuperated, such as on downhill sections. The system will also look to regenerate as much power as possible in advance of entering urban areas where the electric-only driving mode can be deployed. The driver can also be advised on energy recuperation – the system will send a pulse through the accelerator to indicate when sailing mode can be engaged or released completely to harvest energy and boost range. Similarly, the predictive gearshift strategy uses the car’s radar system to sense traffic ahead altering the gearshift based on the likelihood that the driver will wish to overtake.

The S 500 e uses a tablet or smartphone-based system to allow you to pre-heat or pre-cool the car ahead of the driver’s arrival through the innovative ‘Connect Me’ system. The system can also remotely relay information to the driver when away from the car on the charge status, the predicted range and when the next service is due.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 e

The S 500 e combines a 333 hp 2,996 cc biturbo petrol engine with an advanced 116 hp electric motor to return 100.9 mpg and 65 g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle. Capable of travelling over 20-miles on purely electrical power, the S 500 e – arguably the most advanced saloon car in the world – is exempt from road tax, it receives a 100 per cent discount on the London Congestion Charge, and is subject to a low five per cent BIK rate.

The third Hybrid model in the S-class range, the S 500 e follows on from the S 300 h and S 400 h variants. Unlike its predecessors, the 8.7 kWh lithium-ion batteries in the S 500 e can be topped up using external charging devices such as fast chargers. A full charge on a typical public, three-phase power point takes around two hours. Visually, the S 500 e is identical to other S-Class models, with only the discreet badging and flap for the plug-in charging port housed in rear bumper denoting the vehicle’s hybrid status.

Hybrid economy, uncompromised safety and luxury

The S 500 e equipment specifications are based on the conventional S 500 L AMG Line. Among the highlights fitted as standard are 19-inch AMG alloy wheels; AirMATIC air suspension with Adaptive Damping System; Luxury automatic climate control; AMG body styling for the front and rear bumpers; LED Intelligent Light System; front seat memory package; COMAND Online; noise insulating glass; leather upholstery; the choice of seven different ambient interior colours; front and rear seats that can replicate a hot stone massage as well as either heating or cooling occupants and seatbelt-mounted airbags.

Dimensions and weights

The S 500 e has a length x width x height of 5,246 x 2,130 x 1,494 mm, and a long wheelbase of 3,165 mm. It weighs 2,215 kg and has a boot capacity of 395 litres.
