SLS AMG Coupé Black Series
Key facts

  • The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the fifth Black Series model produced by AMG and, constructed under the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy, it achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 407 hp per tonne
  • With a kerbweight of just 1,550 kg, the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the lightest AMG model in production
  • The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series takes inspiration from the SLS AMG GT3 customer racing car that took a triple victory in the 24-hour Dubai race in January 2012 and has taken a number of other race victories and championship titles since its inception
  • The most powerful combustion-engined AMG car in production, the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series produces 631 hp and 635 Nm of torque from an uprated and naturally aspirated AMG 6.2-litre V8 engine
  • Scintillating power and lightweight construction mean the sprint to 62 mph is covered in just 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph
  • The increase of 60 hp over the standard SLS AMG Coupé comes courtesy of increased engine speed from 7,200 rpm to 8,000 rpm, a revised high-speed valve train with modified camshafts, adapted cam geometry, and bucket tappets featuring a special coating normally exclusively used by racing vehicles. The air intakes have also been modified to cater for the new engine speed
  • A newly designed AMG sports exhaust system, produced from titanium and weighing around 13 kg less than the steel unit it replaces, features distinctive centre and rear mufflers to produce a more striking engine sound
  • Extensive use of CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic) on the bonnet, rear panel behind the bucket seats, diagonal underbody braces, and torque tube between the engine and transmission, help to give the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series the best power-to-weight ratio of any Black Series AMG model
  • The AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed sports transmission is installed 10 mm lower to achieve a lower centre of gravity for better handling prowess
  • A temporary M (Manual) mode in the gearbox enables the driver to change to manual gearshifts whilst driving in C, S, or S+ automatic modes simply by flicking one of the steering wheel-mounted paddles
  • Front and rear tracks have been increased by 20 and 24 millimetres respectively, whilst elastokinematics are 50 and 42 per cent more rigid for greater stability in fast double bends
  • The AMG high-performance ceramic composite brakes, fitted as standard on the Black Series to improve high-speed handling, measure 402 x 39 mm at the front and 360 x 32 mm at the rear and weigh 16 kg less than a conventional steel/aluminium braking system
  • Aerodynamic balance is optimised by the front apron and rear apron with diffuser, and side sill panels in Black Series-specific design
  • With specification of the optional AMG Aerodynamics Package, a fixed, adjustable carbon-fibre rear aerofoil, like those seen on the GT3 cars, replaces the standard-fit automatically-raising aerofoil
  • designo leather and Alcantara upholstery feature heavily in the cockpit-like interior of the Black Series on the bottom of the dashboard, the door centre panels, and AMG sports bucket seats, which are 15 kg lighter than the standard AMG seats

Engine reference
