Mercedes-Benz celebrates 16th season as official car sponsor of London Fashion Week
Mercedes-Benz continues its long-standing relationship with London Fashion Week, as official car sponsor.
Practically unchanged since it was launched in 1979, the iconic go-anywhere G-Class is the longest-running model series in Mercedes-Benz history. It has been refreshed and revitalised with advanced new engines, enhanced exterior styling and interior cabin. The UK line-up comprises G 350 d and Mercedes-AMG 63.
The G 350 d is powered by a 2,987cc V6 turbo-charged diesel engine with BlueTEC technology and AdBlue® additive. The advanced Euro-5 compliant unit develops 211 hp at 3,400 rpm, and a healthy 540 Nm at 1,600-2,400 rpm, for a 0-62 mph time of 9.1 seconds and a 108 mph top speed. It drives all four wheels through a 7G-TRONIC Plus seven-speed automatic gearbox. Combined average fuel economy and CO2 emission figures are 25.2 mpg and 295 g/km.
The G 350 d benefits from subtle exterior enhancements that include a distinctive three-louvre radiator grille, flanked by bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, electric heated and folding door mirrors with integral indicators and front area lighting, which is now painted in body colour.
Inside, the G 350 d features an all-new interior with a redesigned dashboard, a new instrument cluster and a completely new centre console. COMAND Online with Media Interface is now standard, which includes a seven-inch centrally mounted colour display, hard disk drive navigation with 3D map display and Traffic Message Channel (TMC), Speed Limit Assist, Linguatronic voice control and in-car internet access. The car’s off-road prowess is visually reinforced by the grab handle on the front-passenger side and the switches for the three differential locks, which are aligned within the driver's field of vision and highlighted with silver-coloured trim.
The “G” in G-Class stands for Geländewagen, meaning cross-country vehicle, and for more than three decades has overcome any obstacle in its path, including obsolescence. Its unrivalled combination of all-road ability and exceptional luxury has seen it win the Paris-Dakar Rally outright and transport two Popes, testimonies to its multi-faceted abilities. The G-Class is, and always has been, hand-assembled for Mercedes-Benz at the Magna Steyr facility in Graz, Austria. Each vehicle takes 40 hours to build, and production is pegged at just 15 a day.
With its robust ladder-frame construction, permanent all-wheel drive, low-range transfer gearbox, three 100 per cent locking differentials and a raft of electronic driver aids specifically calibrated for arduous off-road work, the G 350 d can tackle anything in its path. Torque is split equally between front and rear axles, with the 4ETS Electronic Traction System constantly monitoring the speeds of each wheel and directing torque to those with the best grip. With all three differential locks engaged – front, centre and rear - traction from a single wheel is enough to drive the G 350 d forward.
The G 350 d can ford water up to 600 mm deep, climb 100 per cent gradients and lean at an angle of 54 per cent without tipping over. It can approach slopes with a 36 degree angle and depart them at an angle of up to 27 degrees. The immensely strong ladder-frame chassis is injected with 50 litres of corrosion-repelling wax, while the bodywork is welded at more than 6,000 points to ensure exceptional chassis rigidity.
In keeping with its go-anywhere-in-luxury remit, the G 350 d features a long list of standard equipment. Highlights include18-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels; bi-xenon headlamps; Parktronic audible and visual front and rear parking aid; automatic climate control; leather-covered dashboard; heated front seats with memory function; metallic paint; Anthracite Poplar wood trim; leather upholstery; Bluetooth® interface; COMAND Online with Media Interface; and a powerful Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround-sound system. The G 350 d also features a wide range of optional packages, including a Sports Package, Sports Styling Package and Rear Seat Entertainment System.
The G 350 d has a length x width x height of 4,662 x 2,055 x 1,951 mm. Its wheelbase is 2,850 mm long and it weighs 2,570 kg. It can pull a 3,500 kg braked trailer, or a trailer of 750 kg unbraked, and electronic Trailer Stability Assist, which counters any tendency of the trailer to fishtail, is fitted as standard.
