With its muscular stance and svelte lines, the striking new GLE-Class boldly embodies the dynamism of a sleek coupé with the ruggedness of a robust SUV. Due to arrive in the UK in Summer 2015, the GLE-Class will be available with the choice of powerful EU6-complaint V6 petrol and diesel engines, featuring nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission and responsive 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive as standard. The new GLE 450 AMG – performance flagship for the GLE-Class range – marks the debut of the new AMG Sport model line-up, developed to deliver a more focused and rewarding driving experience. Final prices and full specification will be announced closer to the car’s on-sale date.
The GLE 350 d is powered by a 2,987cc V6 turbodiesel engine, which generates 258 hp at 3,600 rpm and 620 Nm of torque at 1,600-2,400 rpm. The GLE 400 features a 2,996cc turbo-charged petrol engine that’s been tuned to deliver 333 hp at 5,500 rpm and 480 Nm of torque at 1,400- 4,00 rpm. Both powerplants are mated to nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions, and drive all four wheels through permanent all-wheel drive with a fixed 50:50 torque split.
The performance flagship for the GLE-Class range – the new GLE 450 AMG – is the first model of the new AMG Sport model line-up. This dynamic new family of vehicles, which sits between standard Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and full-blown Mercedes-AMG models, have been designed and developed to deliver a more focused and rewarding driving experience. Beneath the GLE 450 AMG’s bonnet sits an enhanced version of the 2,996cc turbo-charged petrol engine that powers the GLE 400, tuned to deliver 367 hp at 5,500 rpm and 520 Nm of torque at 1,400-4,000 rpm, and the engine is partnered by a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmissions. In keeping with its sporting remit, the GLE 450 AMG features a 40:60 front-rear torque split.
The GLE-Class is fitted with an advanced DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system that offers drivers the choice of five modes - INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY, SPORT and SPORT+. Selected using the rotary control on the cabin’s centre console, these options recalibrate the responses of nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, the steering, traction and stability controls – including ASR, ESP with Curve Dynamic Assist, the electronic traction system 4ETS and the brake control system ADAPTIVE BRAKE – and even the engine soundtrack. In the GLE 450 AMG, the difference between the various modes is further enhanced by bringing the instruments into play and aligning their responses with the mode selected.
The GLE-Class arrives with a comprehensive stock of advanced driver assistance, safety and infotainment features, including the DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, COMAND Online, Easy-Pack electronic tailgate opening and closing reversing camera, ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist, Crosswind Assist, brake system BAS Plus, and Collision Prevention Assist Plus. Final specification and pricing will be announced closer to the UK launch in Summer 2015.
Despite its sleek coupé lines, the GLE-Class provides generous accommodation for five passengers, with those in the rear enjoying the widest rear seat bench in its class. Luggage space is equally generous - with a maximum of 1650 litres the GLE-Class not only also offers the largest luggage compartment in its class but also holds the world record for luggage compartments among coupés. For the first time in this segment, Mercedes-Benz is offering a fully electric extendable and retractable trailer coupling, which also includes ESP® trailer stabilisation. The towing capacity of the GLE Coupé is up to 3500 kg (braked).
