Delivering greater performance, improved efficiency, a lower kerb weight and more dynamic and comfort technologies, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 and Mercedes-AMG C 63 S are the performance pinnacles of the C-Class Estate range. They are powered by an all-new hand-assembled 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 Euro 6-compliant petrol engine that drives the rear wheels through an optimised AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed sport transmission and limited slip differential. They go on sale in UK this July.
The compact and lightweight 3,982 cc powerplant – codenamed M177 – generates 476 hp from 5,500 – 6,250 rpm, and 650 Nm of torque from 1,750 – 4,500 rpm, enough to power the 1,785 kgestate to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds and onto an electronically limited 155 mph top speed. On the combined cycle it returns 33.6 mpg and posts CO2 emission figures of 196 g/km.
Powered by an uprated version of the 3,982 cc twin-turbo petrol engine that powers the Mercedes-AMG C 63, the more powerful hand-assembled M177 V8 engine in the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S develops 510 hp at 5,500 – 6,250 rpm and 700 Nm of torque at 1,750 – 4,500 rpm. The 1,785 kg estate accelerates to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds and onto a 155 mph electronically limited top speed. On the combined cycle it matches the Mercedes-AMG C 63, posting economy and CO2 emission figures of 33.6 mpg and 196 g/km.
The M177 engine, the newest member of the BlueDIRECT family of engines, is closely linked to the 4.0-litre V8 engine that powers the Mercedes-AMG GT. It features a raft of cutting edge technologies including: housing the turbochargers between the cylinder banks for a ‘hot inside V’ that results in compact engine dimensions, enhanced throttle responsiveness and low exhaust emissions; third-generation petrol piezo direct injection system with spray-guided combustion; and dynamic engine mounts (standard on the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S model) that adapt their stiffness smoothly and in fractions of a second to the prevailing driving conditions and style.
The software governing the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission in both models has been comprehensively revised to deliver even quicker gearshifts, compared to the outgoing model. Using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programme, the transmission can be customised for individual preference with four modes – ‘C’ (Comfort), ‘S’ (Sport), ‘S+’ (Sport Plus) and ‘Individual’ while the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S model also features a fifth ‘Race’ mode for ultimate response and driver engagement.
Both Mercedes-AMG C 63 models feature a rear axle with a limited slip differential – mechanical on the Mercedes-AMG C 63, and electronically controlled on the more powerful Mercedes-AMG C 63 S. Both systems reduce slip on the inside wheel for quicker acceleration out of corners and enhance stability during high-speed braking. Naturally, the standard three-stage ESP® - ‘ESP ON’, ‘SPORT Handling Mode’ and ‘ESP OFF’ works seamlessly with the locking rear differential.
The two Mercedes-AMG models feature four-link front and multi-link rear suspension layouts, fitted with AMG’s three-stage Ride Control sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system. Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering complements the vehicle’s set-up, with the direct steering ratio providing excellent agility in conjunction with the variable servo assistance.
Exceptional braking performance comes standard with the AMG high-performance braking system. This features internally ventilated and perforated 360 mm brake discs all-round on the Mercedes-AMG C 63 and 390 mm discs at the front and 360 mm at the rear on the more dynamic Mercedes-AMG C 63 S, which can also be specified with an optional 402 mm high-performance ceramic composite front brake discs.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 is shod with 10-spoke light-alloy wheels shod with 245/40 R18 profile tyres up front and 265/40 R18 profile tyres at the rear. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S wears 245/35 R19 (front) and 265/35 R19 (rear) on five twin-spoke light-alloy wheels. The alloy wheels on both models are finished in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish.
The appearance of these two models is significantly enhanced over the standard car. They can be instantly identified by their wider front wings, a bumper featuring deep air scoops to feed the intercoolers, a new grille element and a new bonnet featuring twin power domes – an AMG hallmark. Further back, sill extensions are complemented by a subtle roof spoiler, and a new rear bumper that houses the purposeful quad tailpipes.
Inside, AMG Performance Seats – standard on the ‘S’ - are available with contrast Nappa leather inserts, while the AMG steering wheel is available in black Nappa leather finish or Nappa leather with DINAMICA inserts. The AMG-emblazoned centre console is available with a number of different finishes including carbon or silver, and the cabin is further enhanced by a bespoke IWC timepiece. Key options include a head up display, a 360° camera and an Air Balance package that ionizes, filters, and fragrances the cabin air.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 and Mercedes-AMG C 63 S have a length x width x height of 4,771 x 2,020 x 1,441 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,840 mm. Boot space is 490 litres, which increases to 1,510 litres with the rear seats folded flat, and both models weigh 1,785 kg.
