With its updated name, dynamic new look and even more power, the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S marries family-friendly versatility, class-leading safety and four-season usability with outstanding AMG performance, athleticism and style. This fourth-generation of AMG-developed GLE-Class is part of the four-strong Mercedes-Benz SUV line-up alongside the GLA 45 AMG, the GL 63 AMG and the G 63 AMG.
Hand-assembled AMG power
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S is powered by a 5,461 cc biturbo direct-injection V8 engine, which generates 585 hp at 5,500 rpm and 760 Nm of torque, which remains constant from 1,750 to 5,250 rpm. Driving through a AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic Plus transmission recalibrated for even greater responsiveness, the GLE 63 S will sprint to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds, and onto a 155 mph electronically limited top speed, while delivering exceptional mid-range punch. Combined economy and CO2 emission figures are 23.9 mpg and 276 g/km.
The GLE 63 S biturbo engine produces its exceptional levels of performance, economy and low emissions through an innovative combination of high-tech features. These include spray-guided direct-injection, twin turbo-chargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, alternator management and a weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust with chromed double twin tailpipes that contribute to the engine’s engaging soundtrack.
All geared up
The AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic Plus transmission offers five driving modes - 'Individual', 'Slippery', 'Comfort, 'Sport' and 'Sport+', while the AMG Performance 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive layout features a transfer case that splits torque 40:60 front to rear for greater cornering adjustability. The GLE 63 S also features a new rear-axle differential with a lightweight aluminium case.
The GLE 63 S is underpinned by a heavily revised chassis and suspension layout to deliver even higher levels of agility and dynamism. The standard-fit AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AirMATIC features bespoke struts and ADS Plus continuously variable dampers. Active Curve System with active roll stabilisation is also standard. DYNAMIC SELECT supports this with AMG-tuned drive programmes that adjust throttle response, gear-change strategy, ESP® thresholds, steering power assistance and the damper rates to offer a wide variety of distinct driving experiences.
The AMG high-performance braking system minimises stopping distances, maximises sensitivity and feel and offers high resistance to fading. Ventilated and perforated brake discs – 390 x 36 mm at the front and 345 x 26 mm at the rear – ensure outstanding deceleration. Six-piston fixed calipers are fitted at the front, while the rear axle has single-piston combined floating callipers.
Generous standard equipment
Over and above the high levels of standard equipment enjoyed by all models in the GLE-Class range, the GLE 63 S is fitted out with the following key AMG features: AMG Ride Control sports suspension; Active Curve System with active roll stabilisation; AirMATIC air suspension with self-levelling and Active Damping System; AMG speed-sensing electro-mechanical power steering; 21-inch five-spoke AMG alloy wheels and an AMG high-performance braking system
The GLE 63 S is available with a full gamut of the latest Mercedes-Benz passive and active safety features and telematics options. Seven airbags are standard along with Attention Assist to monitor the alertness of the driver and the Pre-Safe® anticipatory safety system. Further standard safety features include anti-lock braking system with Brake Assist and ESP® Electronic Stability Programme.
Carry anything anywhere
The rear seats have adjustable backrests and are split one-third/two-thirds to give the maximum degree of interior versatility. There is an armrest and cupholder and a through-loading feature for long objects such as skis. Folding both backrests as well as the seat cushions forward creates a level load compartment with a vast capacity of 2,010 litres – almost three times the standard luggage capacity of 690 litres. The GLE 63 S can pull a 3,050 kg braked trailer, and Electronic Trailer Stability Assist, which counters any tendency of the trailer to fishtail, is fitted as standard when the optional Tow Bar is purchased.
The new GLE 63 S features LED tail lamps and the distinctive ‘A-wing’ in the front bumper visually links to other AMG models in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. The radiator grille with the double louvre and integrated AMG lettering and central star are also distinguishing features. The boldly flared wheel arches house 21-inch alloy wheels, in black with the optional Night Package. Cabin highlights include exclusive nappa leather AMG upholstery, as well as dials finished in a carbon-fibre finish with a 198 mph speedometer scale, AMG lettering and red pointers. The main menu includes Racetimer, manual gear indicator and the AMG start-up screen. A new larger media display stands out and the COMAND system can be controlled via the central controller or the new touchpad.
